Not since the departure of the 19th century iron foundries has Peekskill truly enjoyed the economic and recreational benefits of its waterfront. The driving factor in the city’s revitalization design will be to create a modern infrastructure while preserving New England style charm. To date, plans include renovation of the abandoned Lincoln train station and turning it into a museum. Replacement and updates are also planned for the entire utility infrastructure: new water and sewer lines, buried electrical lines, and traditional style street lighting. Roughly 400 town house units with underground parking are planned. The traditional-style architecture will be sensitive to such historic buildings as the abandoned firehouse, Page Printing, Standard house, Union Hotel and the old trolley power house building. A new "village street" will face the train station and the river beyond. Behind this facade, parking for 500 cars will be concealed within the hillside. This project will be designed with the entire city in mind. To enhance downtown commercial activity, waterfront commercial development will be limited to a café and a few other retail stores. Some 400 new residents and other visitors will bring new tax revenues and disposable income to spend locally, generating more business in the downtown district. No plan has been finalized. A final decision will be made after all studies are complete and all opinions have been heard. |

Across the Hudson, the Village of Haverstraw is currently undertaking a revitalization effort similar to the one planned for Peekskill—though on a much larger scale. The revitalization and planned use of the waterfront is key to this effort. In its effort to jump start the rebirth of Haverstraw's waterfront, GDC planned and recently began construction of more than 900 housing units, new ferry piers and a revitalized Main Street. |
